A review of the year 2015

Since 2015 is drawing to an end, I thought that I would share a video of Kirby and Sonic and their activities during the year 2015. With both of their bright personalities, Kirby and Sonic has made 2015 an unforgettable year for me. There are some sad news along with all the good news too, in October, this year, I found Sonic dead in the terrarium, the cause of Sonic's death is unknown to me. Sonic will be missed by both Kirby and I. Now that Sonic is dead, Kirby is all alone. But sometime soon, there will be a new edition to the hermit crabs, a companion for Kirby. Kirby is looking healthy, he has many bright colors from the molt he went through in October around the same time that I found out that Sonic died.

While I was filming the video, my little sister, Autumn, was handling Kirby and Sonic. 

Winter Preparation

Because of the coming of winter which means cold weather, to prepare I have set this tank heater from Zoo Med.It increases the temperature of the inside of the tank by an extra ten degrees just in case it gets too cold in the crabitat during the winter season.

Hamster Wheel

I thought I would try to see if my hermit crabs like to go on a hamster wheel so I bought one for them.
I set them in it and mostly all they do when they're in it is sit there. They don't walk on it very much but they do like to hide under it and when they do, they often times get stuck.

Sonic's 1st Molt

   Like Kirby, Sonic started to molt also. Sonic showed various signs of preparing to molt. Unlike Kirby, Sonic dug several times before he actually started to molt. Kirby's molt took 40 days and Sonic is smaller than Kirby so he'll probably molt for a shorter time.

Update on Kirby

Lately, many changes have been happening to Kirby. First of all Kirby has come up from his first molt. Because he has recently molted, the tips of his legs are really sharp .

Kirby has also changed shells, he has been switching in and out of multiple shells and has now finally chosen to stay in one particular shell.

Since Kirby started to molt, I thought I should get some. As you can see, they come in a pack of 3, small, medium, and large. These cost $4.50 not including shipping.

Kirby's 1st molt

Kirby started going through his first molt, you can't see Kirby but he is buried in the sand on the left side and about one fourth deep out of all the sand. The thing that you can see buried in the sand is not Kirby, what you see is a natural decorating thing that I put in there after it got buried. Ever since I got him which was on April 13th, Kirby would just sit in the corner that he is currently buried in and not move at all or eat anything, so I guess on those days he was preparing to molt. Maybe Kirby started to molt because of all the stress of changing environments, or he was just ready to grow, I'm not quite sure. But I can't wait till Kirby comes up from the sand!

Sonic

Sonic the hermit crab

Sonic is a common purple pincher from Petco. When he was first introduced to Kirby, Kirby was aggressive towards him and pushed his shell around. But they are used to eachother now and Sonic doesn't bother Kirby anymore. Sonic is very energetic and is a fast crawler, however when you pick him up, he doesn't come out of his shell as much as Kirby does. Sonic is a a bit smaller in size than Kirby.

I got Kirby as a souvenir from Myrtle Beach. When I first got him, he was in a shoe box.  He is a common land hermit crab, a purple pincher.  He is showing several signs of preparing to go through the stage of molting. His crabititat includes a 10 gallon tank, fake plants, 1 dish of saltwater, 1 dish of fresh water, a cup to hide in, a bowl for food, 4 inches of play sandbox sand, shells and other wild things to climb on, and a shell to grow into when ever he is ready. Kirby often comes out of his shell.
